Sungas to Kshatrapas (187 BC - 4th c. AD) COINS

Sunga Empire (187-75 BC)

The Sunga dynasty was established in 185 BCE, about 50 years after Ashoka's death, when the king Brhadrata, the last of the Mauryan rulers, was brutally murdered by the then commander-in-chief of the Mauryan armed forces, Pusyamitra Sunga, while he was taking the Guard of Honour of his forces. Pusyamitra Sunga then ascended the throne.
Pusyamitra Sunga, a Brahmin, is known for his hostility and persecution towards the Buddhist faith. He is recorded as having "destroyed monasteries and killed Monks" (Divyavadana, p429-434): 84.000 Buddhist stupas which had been built by the Mauryan king Ashoka were destroyed (R. Thaper), and 100 gold coins were offered for the head of each Buddhist monk (Indian Historical Quarterly Vol. XXII, p.81 ff cited in Hars.407). A large number of Buddhist monasteries (viharas) were converted to Hindu temples, in such places as Nalanda, Bodhgaya, Sarnath or Mathura.
From around 180 BCE the Indian territory was invaded as far as Pataliputra by the Greco-Bactrian ruler Demetrius, with the long-term effect of confining the Sungas to the eastern part of India. Demetrius established an Indo-Greek kingdom in the northern and northwestern part of India, which was to last until the end of the 1st century BCE, and under which Buddhism was able to flourish. In particular, one of the successors of Demetrius, the Indo-Greek "Saviour king" Menander (Pali: Milinda) was a strong benefactor of the Buddhist faith at that time.
During the historical Sunga period (185 to 73 BCE), Buddhist activity also managed to survive somewhat in central India (Madhya Pradesh) as suggested by some architectural expansions that were done at the stupas of Sanchi and Bharhut, originally started under King Ashoka. These stupas, however, are located quite far from the Sunga center of power, and it is questioned whether these works were due to the weakness of the control of the Sungas in these areas, or a late sign of tolerance on their part. The last of the Sunga kings was Devabhuti.

Kuninda Kingdom

The Kingdom of Kuninda was an ancient central Himalayan kingdom from around the 2nd century BCE to the 3rd century, located in the modern state of Uttaranchal in northern India. The history of the kingdom is documented from around the 2nd century BCE. They are mentioned in Indian epics and puranas. The Mahabharata relates they were defeated by Arjuna. The Greek historian Ptolemy linked the origin of the Kuninda to the country where the rivers Ganges, Yamuna, and Beas originate.

One the Edicts of Ashoka on a pillar is also present at Kalsi, in the region of Garhwal, indicating the spread of Buddhism to the region from the 4th century BCE. The first coins of the Kuninda were influenced by the numismatic model of the neighbouring Indo-Greek kingdoms, and incorporated Buddhist symbolism such as the triratna. The Kuninda kingdom disappeared around the 3rd century, and from the 4th century, it seems the region shifted to Shaivite beliefs. There are two types of Kuninda coinage, the first one issued around the 1st century BCE, and the second around the 2nd century CE.

If you are interested in the coinage of the Kunindas, please check out this page - http://www.ancientcoins.ca/kuninda/kuninda.htm

It is an online catalogue I put together of all the known (and many previousely unknown) varieties of the silver Kuninda drachms. It also includes some history of the Kunindas, explanation of the symbols and many other things.

Satavahanas
In the Pūrānas and their coins the dynasty is variously referred to the Andhras, Andhrabhrityas, Satakarnis and Satavahanas. They have been variously interpreted as originating from present day Maharashtra or Andhra Pradesh, and were probably of Dravidian origin.

The Satavahanas started out as feudatories to the Mauryan Empire, and declared independence soon after the death of Ashoka (232 BCE).
They were the first native Indian rulers to issue their own coins with portraits of their rulers, starting with king Vashishtiputra Shri Pulumavi (r. 130-158 CE), a habit derived from that of the Indo-Greek kings to the northwest. Their coins give unique indications on their chronology, language, and even facial features (curly hair, long ears, strong lips). They issued mainly lead and copper coins, and their portrait-style silver coins were usually striked over the coins of the Western Kshatrapa kings. Their coins also display various symbols, such as elephants, lions, horses, and chaityas (stupas), as well as the "Ujjain symbol", a cross with four circles at the end.

The Western Kshatrapas (circa 35 AD - 405 AD)

The Western Kshatrapas, or Western Satraps, (35-405 CE) were Saka rulers of the western and central part of India (Saurashtra and Malwa: modern Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh states). They were contemporaneous with the Kushans who ruled the northern part of the Indian subcontinent, and the Satavahana (Andhra) who ruled in Central India.

The Gupta Empire and its successors

The origins of the Guptas are shrouded in obscurity. The Chinese traveller I-tsing provides the first evidence of the Gupta kingdom in Magadha. He came to India in 672 CE and heard of 'Maharaja Sri-Gupta' who built a temple for Chinese pilgrims near Mrigasikhavana. I-tsing gives the date for this event merely as '500 years before'. This does not match with other sources and hence we can assume that I-tsing's computation was a mere guess.

The early Gupta drachmas were derived from the earlier coins of Kshatrapas (obverse was practically unchanged, while the mountain on reverse was replaced with the image of Garuda)

These coins are not well-researched and are attributed to the late Gupta period because of the find spots of a few known hoards. They are rare and appear on the market rarely and in small groups (like these coins, all of which were found in the same hoard).

Successors of Guptas - Kingdom of the Maitrakas of Valabhi

Towards the middle of the 5th century A.D., the Gupta empire started to decline. Senapati Bhatarka, the Maitrak general of the Guptas, took advantage of the situation. in 470 AD,, he laid the foundation of his kingdom of Valabhi what came to be known as the Maitrak kingdom. He shifted his capital from Girinager to Valabhipur, near Bhavnagar, on Saurashtra's east coast. Maitrak of Valabhi became very powerful and their writ prevailed over large parts of Gujarat and even over adjoining Malwa.

Bhataraka was succeeded by his son Dharasena-I, both of them called themselves, Senapatis ! The next five rulers namely Dronasimha, Dhruvasena-I, Darpatta, Guhasena and Dharasena-II were called Maharajas. Dharasena-II was succeeded by his son Siladitya-I Dharmaditya. He ruled between 606 AD and 612 AD, covered an extensive territory and Valabhi was the most powerful kingdom in Western India. Siladitya was succeeded by his son Dharasena-III who annexed Gujarat to his territory. A successor of hasty temper, Dhruvasena-II, the younger brother of Dharasena-III ruled till 641 AD. He was a religious character, and he attended many Buddhist assemblies.

There was a lot of trouble during the after the death of Dharasena-IV, but was only restored during the next ruler Siladitya-III. The successors of Siladitya-III were Siladitya-IV, Siladitya-V, Siladitya-VI and Siladitya-VII. It was during the reign of Siladitya-VII, the family of Valabhi came to an end. The rise and growth of the Chalukyas, Pratiharas, and Rashtrakutas was a serious menace to Valabhi and was partially the cause for its end..

Maitrakas set up a university which came to be known far and wide for its scholastic pursuits and was compared with the famous Nalanda university. There was an atmosphere for intellectual freedom in the university and the scholars from all parts of India came to Valabhi and stayed for more than two to three years to discuss 'Possible and Impossible Doctrines'

They issued coins (drachms) in the style of Western Kshatrapas. Though one can't see any artistic talents of their own, the excellent minting techniques could be observed. The obverse of their coinage carried a stylished bust presenting military characteristics on the face of the ruler, and the reverse carried their name and the title in Brahmi legend.
