Mauryans (6th c.BC - 3rd c.AD)COINS

Gandhara (ca.600-500 BC)

FIRST Indian coins issue every struck!

These fascinating large coins, equal to about 3 karshapanas, are the most likely candidates to be the very first Indian coins ever struck. During the 6th century BC Gandhara was a subject of the Persian Empire (as known from an inscription dating to the times of Darius, ca.520-518 BC). The Persians are likely to have introduced the native Gandharans to the idea of a struck coinage. The earliest Gandharan coins - shatamanas (=100 manas, the meaning is unknown, also known as "bent bars") , were probably based on a Persian siglos standard, since the average weight of these shatamanas equals to the weight of 2 Persian sigloi. From Gandhara, the idea of struck, or punchmarked, coinage spread south and soon the punchmarked coins were produced in many other regions of northern and central Indai.

This theory concerning the first coins in India is quite widespread, though it is not accepted by everyone (some people prefer an idea of independent invention of coinage, and are against the idea of the foreign introduction).

These shatamanas were issued over a long period of time, though it is uncertain when their production ended (Chandragupta Maurya conquered Gandhara around 300 BC, and the production of the independent Gandharana coinage did not continue past that point). The good silver shatamanas were replaced by the short debased issues and then by silver-plated and copper bars (which are much more common and retail for about 100$ each). The early good silver shatamans are very rare - although a few hoards of these coins were unearthed in the last century, very few coins reached the numismatic market

Kasala Kingdom (ca.600-470 BC)

These silver square coins with various punchmarks are the earliest silver Indian coins. Kosala was an ancient Indian kingdom, corresponding roughly in area with the region of Oudh. Its capital was Ayodhya. It was a powerful state in the 6th centuty B.C. but was weakened by a series of wars with the neighboring kingdom of Magadha and finally (4th cent. B.C.) absorbed by it. Kosala was the setting of much Sanskrit epic literature including the Ramayana. Buddha and Mahavira, founder of Jainism, taught in the kingdom.

If you are looking for more Kasala drachms, please contact us (we are selling a collection of these rare coins). These silver punchmarked coins from Kosala Kingdom are much scarcer than the ones from either the Maurian Empire or from Magadha Kingdom.

Magadha Kingdom

Magadha was an ancient kingdom of India, mentioned in both the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. It was also one of the four main kingdoms of India at the time of Buddha, having risen to power during the reigns of Bimbisara (c. 544-491 BCE) and his son Ajatashatru (c. 491-460 BCE). The core of the kingdom was that portion of Bihar lying south of the Ganges, with its capital at Rajagriha (modern Rajgir). Magadha expanded to include most of Bihar and parts of Bengal with the conquest of Anga, and then expanded up the Ganges valley annexing Kosala and Kashi. Magadha formed one of the sixteen so-called Mahajanapadas (Sanskrit, 'great country'). The Magadha empire included republican communities such as Rajakumara. Villages had their own assemblies under their local chiefs called Gramakas. Their administrations were divided into executive, judicial, and military functions. Bimbisara was friendly to both Jainism and Buddhism and suspended tolls at the river ferries for all ascetics after the Buddha was once stopped at the Ganges River for lack of money.

Bhattiya to Ajatashatru (ca.550-461 BC)

The date when these coins started being issued is most obscure. It is fairly certain that by ca.470 BC the large flat karshapanas such as this coin were replaced by karshapanas of the same weight but struck on smaller, thicker flan. So the tentative dating of these coins is ca.550 BC (when the first coins of this type were produced) until about 470 BC, when they were replaced by type II karshapanas.
The list of rulers from this period was as follows:
Bhattiya - ?-545 BC
Bimbasara - ca.545-493 BC
Ajatashatru - ca.493-461 BC

More precise attribution of these coins is impossible at this point.

Times of Uddayina (ca.461-445 BC)

All 2nd issue karshapanas are extremely rare - these coins are considered to be a transitional issue between the large-flan 1st issue (coined under Ajatashatru and his ancestors) and the smaller-flan 3rd issue. The 2nd issue is the smallest out of all the 7 Magadha-Maurya issues, and the rarest one of them all. It is also not well-studied because of the small number of specimens available in museum or on the market.

Mauryan Empire (321 - 187 BC)

The earliest Indian Empire, the Mauryans united most of India under their rule for the first time.

A number of drachms of this type came out recently, presumably found in a recent hoard. They are tentatively attributed to Ashoka because of the Ashoka's royal symbol on obverse. This is a very rare chance to purchase one of these - it is very likely that as soon as the coins from this group are sold to private collectors, the price will increase and they will be almost impossible to find on the market in the future!
